EducationArgentina: EducationEducation from pre-school to university level is available free of charge. Education is officially compulsory for all children at primary level, between the ages of six and 14 years. Secondary education lasts for between five and six years, depending on the type of course: the normal certificate of education (bachillerato) takes five years, a course leading to a commercial bachillerato lasts five years, and one leading to a technical or agricultural bachillerato takes six years. Technical education is supervised by the Consejo Nacional de Educación Técnica. Non-university higher education, usually leading to a teaching qualification, is for three or four years, while university courses last for four years or more. There were 36 state universities and some 48 private universities in 2001. The total enrolment at primary schools in 2005 included 98.5% of the relevant age-group, while enrolment at secondary schools included 78.4% of pupils in the relevant age-group. Government expenditure on education and culture for 2009 was forecast at 13,723.5m. new pesos (representing 5.9% of total budgeted public expenditure).
